Friends - who says the Internet has to be toxic? At its best, the Internet provides moments of delight that come from connecting people across their interest graphs. And sometimes connections that start virtually - shared interest on the socials - can lead to meaningful connections IRL.
So it was last fall when
dropped into a Zoom version of Clusters class, during our discussion of the Hsinchu semiconductor cluster. And this week, we took it up a level, when
came to the Berkeley campus for an IRL meetup!Big thanks to the Asia Business Club at Haas for helping put the event together.
We covered a variety of topics, under Chatham House rules, but given the venue, timing, MBA demographic and interest graph, one might intuit they involved career, working internationally, and a dash of semiconductors and AI.
The room where it happened
(Yes, that’s pizza in the foreground. Off-brand, perhaps, but then again, it was a campus event!)
Thanks again to
for coming by campus. That was a lot of fun. Looking forward to the sequel.Speaking of the Asia Business Club - it’s a new year and we have new officers. I was delighted to meet with new co-presidents Ran Jiang and Vaibhavi Sharma to discuss the upcoming 18th Haas Asia Business Conference, to be held at the Haas School of Business on April 6. Mark your calendars!
Looking forward to working with the team, and, of course, to event day. Stay tuned for updates!
Around 25 years ago I flew from Chicago to Haas for Days at Haas, a weekend for admitted students.
It was a sun-dappled weekend. The temperature, and the people, were warm and welcoming. The Bay Bridge, and San Francisco, loomed with potential in the distance. All seemed bright and possible. That weekend closed the deal for me - I would come to Haas to get my MBA/MA-Asian Studies. So it was with a certain fond nostalgia that I passed this sign on my way into campus. The circle of (MBA) life continues.
This week was Valentine’s Day. While running other errands I chanced a stop in Marin’s one surviving dedicated record store - the only one that made it through before vinyl’s return as a collector’s item. To my delight the store had Cal Tjader Sounds Out Burt Bacharach, in excellent condition. What could be more Valentine-y? With that, I’ll end this newsletter with Tjader’s version of Bacharach’s Moneypenny.
Onward and upward!
